Hello! This is my first post here, and I'm here by an invitation from Trinity Amps. I built a clone of the Matchless Spitfire last year, and it sounds great! It was my second ever tube amp project.

I also visit the forums at diystompboxes.com (mostly), ax84.com, 18watt.com, ampage and projectguitar.com

Welcome to the Forum Paul. There was a post asking about the sound differance between a Lighting and a Spitfire. Since you built a Spitfire, do you have any opinins on that, please visis the post.

Thanks for the welcome guys. :)

I haven't actually heard the Lightning, but the main differences are the tone control schemes and the Lightning also has one more 12AX7 than the Spitfire. This results in more gain, and you can get a dirtier tone, so to speak. The thing that I like about the Spitfire is that it's a pretty clean amp, and that is one reason I wanted to build it. This is my page on the Spitfire clone that I built: http://www.diyguitarist.com/GuitarAmps/Spitfire.htm

I have also built an amp called the "Octal Fatness", which is about a 5 watt single ended amp that has a great distortion tone, as well as a nice chimey clean tone. This is my page on the Octal Fatness: http://www.diyguitarist.com/GuitarAmps/OctalFatness.htm

I like both amps a lot.

Paul! welcome to the forum :)

I'd just like to thank YOU for all the help you've given me in my DIY adventures, from pedalboards right on up .. I was actually going to build a spitfire according to your specs but I ended up deciding to do the lightning instead because I liked the idea of having a bit more gain/drt on hand if i want it :)

witeshade-

You're welcome! I still use that DIY pedal board (converted bass case) every week, and it's been working great! Here's a link to that page for the unfamiliar: http://www.diyguitarist.com/DIYStompbox ... lBoard.htm

Anyhow, let us know how your Lightning turns out.

Interesting SE build. I was pondering the potential need for a SE guitar amp forum the other day, actually - I'm eyeing the West Labs SE transformer sets, which actually look really reasonable compared to tweed champ repro iron.

The thing I like about the Octal Fatness is that you can get nice cranked amp tones at less than deafening volume levels. It makes a nice studio amp or an amp for small to medium sized venues with a PA system. 8)
