Some Fenders have a bleeder resistor permanently mounted to the first filter cap. Is there a reason not to do this with a Lightning, or should I remove the bleeder as soon as my amp is tested and running properly?

You can leave it there as long as it is around 220K. I left mine on. It shows a negligible load to the PS and does add a margin of safety to the amp.

I have one on my 18...and I feel it's a godsend.

It really takes away a bit of worry. Whenever I'm going to start sticking my hands into the amp, I run a quick check on the caps to see if there's anything left. Usually after no more than a minute or two from shutting off the amp, it's all gone.

I don't think I will be building any amp in the future without a bleeder. It's a safe addition that doesn't seem to affect amp tone or playability in the slightest.

Can anyone point me to a schematic that uses one? Where would one go in a standard circuit?

Put a 220K 2W resistor across the first filter cap (or any of them really). So, it would go from the + to the - terminal of the cap. It will provide a tiny load to the PS when the amp is in use and enough load to drain the stored energy to ground when the amp is turned off. Your voltages inside the amp will be 12VDC or leass within a minute or two of switching the amp off.
