I'm trying to determine which type of tube to put into V1, I would appriciate any suggestions that would allow me to reduce the gain slightly. I have seen 12au7, 12dw7, and others. I'm not sure which has the most gain and which has the least? Also can any tube be substituted for a 12ax7?

Help.

Thanks in advance for all replies

Lots of folks will sub a 12AT7 to lower the gain of a preamp stage, and that works fine in many amps. In my TC-15, though, I did the mod that puts a switch in series with the cathode bypass cap on V2. It drops the gain just a hair, giving a bit more headroom before breakup. The cool thing is that you have the ability to switch between the two, and it only requires a miniature toggle switch ..... AND, there's already a hole in the chassis for it! :-)

and this link too: Gain Factor pluis you can drop/increase the gain of the preamp as well like is done on the sIII. If it's not an sIII, you can make it one. And if you have the Builders Guide, check out the Tweaks.
