I know that my wiring is far from perfect, but the hisss seems to be especially loud in my amp. I have isolated the hiss to the 'cut' control. When I turn the knob all the way up (furthest clockwise) there is almost zero noise, however with it turned all the way down, there is quite a bit of noise. So the questions is...

Is there any way to determine where to start looking for cold joints/bad grounds (i.e. preamp/poweramp) based on this information?

Carbon comp resistor amps have a definite hiss level. It's not a HI Fi amp!

Assuming it's not a tube, if you want to get rid of it, you'll need to start replacing resistors in the low voltage, low signal level locations.

P.s. I guess the only real way to cure the hiss is to play louder
