Anything speacial about the ot in the lightning Ive noticed they have 4 and 8 ohm outputs only ? also whats acceptable plate voltage range? what size is the choke? if i skip the choke what a good resistor to replace it with 1.5K sound about right to start, what should it be biased at?, what about a master volume is it a useful mod, thanks mark

Mark, take a look at the TC-15 drawings in the Resources section. I think that will answer most of your questions. The TC-15 is basically kind of a Lightning with an additional EF86 channel. By default it doesn't use a choke. Matchless' OTs for the Spitfire/Hurricane/Lightning family are designed to provide a 4k load impedance to the EL84s. Trinity uses the Trinity 18W OT for the TC-15 (as well as the 18W PT), which has 5k primary tappings - close enough to what Matchless' OT has. HTH

I would really recommend trying the Trinity OT, and also using no choke in the power amp. IIRC the Trinity OT is a good bit cheaper than the West Labs one and I think you will like what you hear. :D

Hi, I already have the West Labs transformers and have just ordered the TC15 kit from Stephen. I have the choke, would you be suggesting I do not use it. Naturally I have no idea whether it impacts on tone whatsoever so look forward to the response.

Put the choke in, but have a switch so you can bypass it. With the choke engaged the amp will have a softer, looser feel.
