Hey folks,

I've noticed a bug on my lightning. When switching from the low input to the high input and vice versa...if there's any volume on the amp at all...

I get sqealing. Any of you guys have any suggestions?

-Frank

Just to follow up...the amp is dead quiet when plugged in...no complaints there...

just when the cable is pulled for another input, there's some nasty squealing until it's plugged into the other input..

Hi Frank - Did you check to see if one of the switches on the input jacks isnt making contact? I have had it happen on a 5e3 and it made all kinds of crazy noises. Every once in a while something goes wrong thats easy to fix. Joe

Frank,

Do you have any pics you can post? Also, do you have both input jacks shorting to ground, or just the hi input? It really sounds like the jacks aren’t grounding right or they are introducing a ground loop with nothing plugged in, did you use Switchcraft or Cliff Style?

They're Cliff's Erl,

I'll get a picture of the input up as soon as I can...probably sometime in the next hour or so...

OK Guys,

I've done some more troubleshooting...unfortuately, my wire stole the digicamera, so it'll be another day or so before I can take a picture of the input section.

The frustrating thing, is that with nothing plugged into the inputs....they *are* grounded. The cliffs are making a connection...and I've verified this visually and electronically.

Any other ideas? I'm at a loss...

Did resoldering the input jack connections solve it?

You know it did, Stephen!! :)

Just so everyone else out there can benefit....Richie over at 18watt.com suggested resoldering the input jacks....and that took care of the problem!

Well, if it hadn't I was at a loss, but it's good to know. That's pretty bizzare.

I just finished my build last night. I too had a very similar problem. It was also casued by an intermittent ground on the High input. Also using clif jacks....

I reflowed the solder on the ground lug and viola, problem solved. If you haven't already, try to reflow the solder on the ground connections of your input jacks. Visually they may check out, and they may even check out with a meter, but physical stress or changes cause intermittency. I have a feeling that the inner part of the cliff jack lugs may not be fully tinned and may require a bit of additional heat (or good electrical contact on the surface of the lug).

Anyway, post back if you get it (or if you don't)

Good advice & help is always appreciated. Sometiimes you may need to use contact cleaner on those jacks as well, especially if it reocurrs.
