Hi all,
After playing my amp for a couple of months now, I've settled on running it with the bass at 12 o'clock and the treble completely off, most of the time. I play a humbucking Hamer, a Strat, and a Tele and I think they all sound best with no treble at all. I'd like to tame the treble down a bit and was wondering what my options were. I read an earlier thread about switching out the .022 caps with Sozos and thought I'd try that first. What would you guys recommend past that? I generally like the chimminess of the amp at lower volumes and don't want to mess that up, but it can get a little brittle at times. I'm running a Hellatone 30 speaker, which does a good job with the bass, but the amp is still trebly. Any other easy ideas?

Moid,

I did a couple of things on mine to help with the treble. First a used a switched pot for the volume and put the 180pf cap on a switch, this will cut a lot of treble when switched out, and is an easy mod to do. I also added a cut control, but that is a little more involved as far as having to have another pot etc.

I would not switch out the .022 caps with Sozos. We tried that and found that it did not improve the sound in fact made it worse.

lbet reports "Generally the took away to much of the natural twang on the amp. The sozo's sounded too "smooth". I had a pair in the PI but took them out a couple of weeks ago."

They work fine in the 18 though.

Look for 'cut control' on this forum and you'll find various ways to reduce the treble. It could also be the choice of speaker.

I disagree - I put in 0.022uf sozos and sozo in the MV and that tamed the overall brightness of the amp and tend to tighten the bottom end of the amp. Sure maybe it may take away from the natural brightness character that the matchless is known for, but to me made it more punchy.
I also have a cut control and found the sozos to have mnore effect on the brightness.
Different strokes for different folks.
You should also note, it takes about 100 hours burn in time to really hear what the sozo's can do. Well I first put them in, they made the amp sound quite wooly.

Well, maybe it's worth it to try then. Specially in the position you describe. Seems like a simple enough solution.

8)

Find a Mini Toggle DPDT Switch with center off position. Use a 250pF for Really Bright, and a 500pF for Normal Bright. Center is completely Off.

Thanks Erl,
Is that a 1 meg push-pull pot on the volume?
