Here is my latest take on the 1st solo in Comfortably Numb, with my updated rig as follows:
Homemade "Black Strat" now with the Seymour Duncan SSL1-C in the bridge. This is the Duncan Custom Shop pickup that is used in the Fender David Gilmour Custom Shop Strats. I've now tried this pickup, the regular production Duncan SSL-5, and the Dimarzio FS-1, and to my ears, the SSL1-C gets the closest to "the tone".
The pedal chain has been updated to place the Colorsound Power Boost BEFORE the Big Muff. I really think this is key to getting that dry "crying" tone. When placed after the Muff, it smoothes it out too much.
The Muff has been updated to a SUF Violet Ram's Head. Was previously using a BYOC Large Beaver. The SUF has more clarity and a sharper high end that also helps the tone.
So pedal chain is: Boost > Muff > Flanger > Delay (pretty simple set up)
TRIWATT settings:
Normal Vol: 10:00
Bright Vol: 10:30
Overdrive: Off
Bass: 10:00
Treble: 12:00
Mids 1:30 (this is really key)
Presence: 1:30
Master: 8:30 (yes, you are reading this correctly...let the pedals do the work!)
Oops, I almost forgot the most important little secret....use a Herco Flex 75 pick, and pick with the dimpled end of it. It really gets a nice sharp bite to the notes.
