Does it need to be a power resistor? Couldn't I get away with a 1 watt or 1/2 watt 1K5 instead?

Yes, a low power resistor is sufficient. The currents flowing in the control grid are miniscule.

PS I'm talking control grid here..for the Screen grid you want 3 or 5 watters. Some will specify flame proof types for the screen.

Grid stoppers are usually big like that for stability reasons/heat.
