Sound Clips sound great!

Was the tube setup the 6V6s & the 12AX7 PI?

I don't see a reason to keep my Marshall JCM900 4502 - It wouldn't get used. The sound on the "Les Paul Custom-Dirty-Bright Channel" is what I wanted my Marshall to sound like, plus you are getting the Hiwatt Sounds also.

Yes. Plus you get lots of other options with AT7 & KT66.

Decisions, decisions!!

I will first try the JJ 6V6 power tubes with a JJ 12AT7 PI tube. I have a bunch of Sovtek 12AX7WBs & some older MESA 12AX7s (Chinese?) I will try in V1, V2, & V3.

Why would you want to do that, when the sIII is already probably the world's cleanest Marshall 18W style amp? Anyway, by way of some background, the early Hiwatt's phase inverters were specifically designed to use a 12AT7. The Triwatt also uses this same PI. 12AT7s and 12AX7s also happen to bias differently, and the 12AT7 pulls a lot of current relative to a 12AX7. In other words, 12AT7s aren't lower gain 12AX7s. So when you put a 12AX7 in an early Hiwatt type of PI, it biases colder (with different resulting PI voltages), and the PI itself starts to clip. This is what causes the earlier breakup you get with a 12AX7 in the PI, apart from the increased gain. OTOH the 18W PI is already designed for minimum clipping with a 12AX7, so it doesn't actually make that much difference when you put a 12AT7 in.
