Received an e-mail yesterday from Stephen that my Triwatt headcab is done, and I should have the kit soon. I'm going to do a build thread on Harmony Central, and will have lots of photos to post.

This will be build #4 for me, so here's to hoping it goes smoothly.

7 days and counting!

Send us the HC link and maybe we can duplicate the post here for reference too.

Awesome! I keep meaning to do detailed build threads but then I get so caught up in the assembly I don't want to take a break!

Well, I got a picture of the head cab e-mailed to me (thanks for that Stephen!) and it's perfect.

I'm pretty sure there are at least 2 more people on HCAF that are interested in the Triwatt. I can't be a lone wolf over there for long. ;) Oh well, I'll just have to build a TC15 afterward to cover the British spectrum (I've got an 18W TMB for my Marshall and a Marwatt for my Hiwatt/Marshall hybrid).

You were just quicker to pull the trigger than me! I've been looking at it for months

Good luck man, I'm hoping to order mine very very soon. Will definitely keep up with your build!

Ah...I think it may be time for a Triwatt..

Stephen, perhaps you can build this cab for me...I'll email you directly on it :D

If I shorten it up as pictured I can take the height down a notch, maybe

Do you want to fit KT66 in it or not. Height matters then.

Any height reduction I was thinking of would be done still being able to accomoadte KT66s..if that's not possible....so be it.

What's the dimensions of a standard Triwatt cab??

I expect the "stock" cab would be too wide for your taste Keith. Height wise you can't make it any shorter & still have the KT66 option. In fact, it may be necessary to remove the chassis to install the 66's with the stock cab. Is that correct Stephen? I still haven't tried them in mine.

Nope, stock cab you can take the KTs out/in. Cab is 23" X 8.75" X 8.75" . Chassis is 20 X 6.5 X 2.5.

Cant go any shorter than 8.75" h. 8" if you use 6V6 or EL34 only.

oops did I say EL34?? Yes I did!!! It can be done

That's funny since I just found out the Triwatt was 6V6s...I thought it was EL34s all along

With the EL-34 'option'...is the KT66 option still there?? Just curious as I already have a 20/40 watt (switchable) 6V6 amp (JJ 6v6 tubes)?

Actually, those cab dimensions are too bad for me. The cab looks more elongated in the pics. Although I would likely go with something like I posted....

Both.

You run EL34s by running the amp speaker impedance different than labeled on the back. EL34 requires less OT primary impedance so for an 8 ohm speaker, you set it to 16 ohms. This lowers the load the EL34 sees and they work efficiently.

Explanation: A nominal 8-ohm load reflects back 8K to the plates of the output tubes with the TRIWATT transformer. The amp is designed to produce its maximum power into this load, with a designed frequency response. This is the "power bandwidth".

Now, if we change the speaker setting on the amp to a 16-ohm load and run the 8 ohm speakers, the reflected impedance drops to 4k which is close enough to what the EL34 want to deliver maximum power into this load, with a designed frequency response.

Our TRIWATT OT is a 50 watt OT design so it can handle what the EL34 pair can deliver!!

To run the KT66, you just set it and run it as labeled.

Make sense? 8)

Just to clarify, the Triwatt is spec'ed for 6V6s or KT66s, depending on whether you want 22Wish or 38Wish. We didn't aim for EL34s, since there are already Hiwattish amps out there that run EL34s for around 50W out. However, it just so happens that you can still run EL34s in the amp, using the trick just described. :D It will still give around 40W with the stock Triwatt PT and voltage levels.

Amps of the Hiwatt family are like Model T Fords. They come only in black.

Then I'll think of mine as a "Reeves". ;)

Actually, funny side story, the bassist in my band (names Steve) is interested in having me build him one, and he wants the faceplate to say "STEEVES".
