Guys -- I am a (soon to be) new Triwatt owner. I'm about T-minus 10 days from getting my Triwatt head, and I'm fired up. Usually, I would wait until receiving the amp before asking (probably silly) questions. But I have a gig coming up in about 3 weeks for which I'd like to use the Triwatt. Mostly classic rock / pop covers; no doubt the Triwatt can handle all of this territory. But we are doing a set of full-on hair metal for fun, and I'm just not sure the Triwatt will get gainy enough for me to do this stuff (Whitesnake, Ratt, Cinderella, etc.) without a pedal in front of it.

Any of you experts have experience with doing cheezy hair-metal with your Triwatt. Perhaps you do, but don't want to admit it! Feel free to PM.

Cheers. Looking forward to getting to know this crowd and this amp.

If you are looking for a "Marshall Sound in a Box" with moderate gain (Rock Mode - Plex) to moderatety high gain (Rawk Mode - JCM 800) I would go for the Catalinbread "Dirty Little Secret".

I have one and I love it. I use it in the Plexi (Rock Mode) and I hit it with the 10 db boost on my Damage Control "Liquid Blues" if I need slightly more gain. It sounds very "Stock Marshall" and I would get something else if you want super high gain, or extremely scooped mids.

The Triwatt gets lots of gain on its own when you engage the Overdrive stage, giving a real edgy grind. With the Overdrive engaged, the Triwatt has the same number of gain stages working as a SLO 100.

2) The overdrive is freakin sweet. When I engage the overdrive I can get a feedback even when the tone is fairly clean. (once again see clip below). This happens at fairly low volume too.
3) Distortion - I cranked everything with a Les Paul and immediate heard the metal gods commanding me to Thrash!!! (that's right John). This will be my next clip cuz this sound is WAY beyond anything I would think of for this kind of amp.

However, this is Hiwatt style distortion, which is very dynamic and lacks the compression of most other high gain amps. So it's probably still a good idea to run a pedal in front to get more compression.

Last weekend I finally got to gig (twice) with my TRIWATT. It did extremely well. I set it for a pushed clean sound, which was very lively and balanced, with a little bit of breakup when I strummed hard. I also set the overdrive at about 10 o'clock, which gave a solid solo boost when engaged. Then I used two overdrive pedals (Catalinbread WIIO (for classic overdrive) and the CMATMODS Brownie (for more modded-Marshall tones)). I played a Les Paul with Shaw PAF-style pickups both nights.

The TRIWATT was a fantastic platform for this guitar and both of these pedals; probably the best pedal platform I've ever used. I was able to cover everything from Prince, to Johnny Cash, to the Black Crowes, to Guns & Roses, to Metallica. Not surprisingly, I think my best sound was doing a really loud version of "Won't Get Fooled Again"; I certainly had Pete's sound, if not his talent. Then stomping the boost, with my pedal(s) on, gave me a really organic over-the-edge sound for solos. Got a great Slash-style sound for "Sweet Child" and "Welcome to the Jungle" using the Brownie. Again, I had the tone; if only I could play like him.

I am still figuring out the best way to set up the TRIWATT -- I've run it some with the master cranked and the channel volumes low, other times with the channel volumes at about 2 o'clock, and the master lower. Both sound good, but I'm kind of digging the punch you get with the master up.

Bottom line: Excellent amp, very versatile, very pedal friendly. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
