Hey guys,

Built and completed my Tramp a couple of years ago and have mainly been running it with a 6L6. I have also briefly tested it with an old Telefunken EL34 and is quite chimey, but quiet (compared to 6L6) and I suspect that tube is on its way out. Recently I picked up a 2nd hand Tung-sol EL34B. It appears to be in good condition and the seller said it had only done 15hours. However, when plugging it into my Tramp set to high bias and 2.5k impedance, it is dead. No sound, no orange glow and no warmth.

Should the EL34b work in the Tramp? I've read that it needs a higher bias than a standard EL34, but even then it should still light up and produce some sound, right?

N/B - amp is working fine with all other power-tubes tried.

Should be a direct replacement. I Suspect the tube is dead.

Thanks Coco. Just another thing I noticed: the EL34B has no pin 6. From the datasheet this appears to be normal for an EL34B, but the Telefunken EL34 which works in my Tramp does have a pin 6.

From looking at the schem and layout, pin 6 (on the tube socket) appears to just be an anchor point for the 10k 2W resistor, so I don't suspect this would be an issue. Am I missing something?

You are correct, just an anchor point. So should be no impact.
