Hey All,

Have any of you made a current limiting device for when you start up your amp for the first time? It's a pretty simple set up consisting of a bulb in between the wall outlet and the amp. The idea is that the bulb will limit the amount of current going to the amp on start up so it acts as a protection device. I have the stuff to make it kicking around and was just wondering if anyone here had ever made one or used one.

Cheers!

Lots of people here have made one. It's a good thing to have if you are testing something old or something that has never been plugged into the AC supply before.

I have never gotten around to building one, though.

If yit oudtn have a variac, it's a good device to have at hand. Not very expensive.

Yes, a Variac would be the ideal thing to have. I'll look into the cost and possibly look for a used one.

Ideally you would have both. I've had a Variac for years. I've also had more than enough AC parts kicking around for years to make a current limiting device. Reading this thread has prompted me to finally build one!

In case some readers don't know, it's just an ordinary light bulb in series with an AC socket. A "deluxe" version would also have a switch to bypass the bulb and another switch to turn the whole thing on and off. Look up "dim bulb tester" for more details.

I finished mine as well. A bulb, a light switch and a power outlet. I put the bulb first, the the light switch, then the power outlet. The switch controls the power to the outlet so power to the amp can be turned on or off. Very simple.
