hi all, I was just troubleshooting my amp and i just thought man if I just had an oscope figuring out where this nasty distortion is coming in would be so much easier. started to look around and saw some low cost pocket oscopes but have no idea if they are even worth the money. Since I only want/need it to solve a short-term problem I dont want to spend anymore than I have to on it. I dont need any advanced features, would just like to view the waveform and look for anomolies. Anybody have recommendations?
thanks,
Don

This is the one that people are raving about. When I eventually get one, this will be it.

http://www.amazon.com/Rigol-DS1102E-Oscilloscope-Channels-Sampling/dp/B001VKCJ0M/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1420995781&sr=1-1&keywords=oscilloscope

At that price, it's totally worth just skipping a limited pocket o'scope and getting a very useful tool that will serve you well for a long time.

Really like this one too. Keep meaning to pick one up.

Would a audio probe work for your trouble shooting? Cheap and you can build it yourself. A very useful tool for tracking down and isolating problems.

yea I was looking at the pocket scopes and the PC based scopes; most reviews are not favorable for any of them. If they would work well enough for my purposes I might try and pick one up. 400 bucks is out of my price range. I will try and verify voltages again using DVM but it seems like they are all fine last time I checked.
thanks!

If you only need a scope for this project maybe you can borrow one or use a schools/community colleges?

that is a good idea I can definitely look into that. Actually I think my company might have some engineering departments that might have some of these but I would have to track someone down that would let me in that area. still worth a try thanks

I was in the same boat as you. I was looking into getting a PC-based scope and even building my own using a sound card. After not finding one that could meet all my needs (I do electronics other than tube amps too) I decided it would be a waste of money to buy a cheap scope only to find out it would not meet my needs down the road. So I decided to save-up until I can afford the $400 Rigol and just make-do without for now.

You could also check Craigslist for a used bargain in your area. I've seen halfway decent analog scopes on there in my area for under $200.

I just kept patiently looking once I knew what I wanted. I had another which I then gave to kurtlives!
