I made it for a guy here in Ontario, on condition if he liked it he would trade me for a USA made Hamer (LP doublecut style, dual HB)

I should have the Hamer this week :)

Its a way I can acquire a new guitar myself without having to pay a lot for it. This guitar cost me just about $700 in parts plus close to another $100 for the harshell case, and about 25 hours work.

If I were to make one for sale, I would have to charge about $1500 to $1700 - closer to $2000 if the neck and body were bound.

I'm guessing here :D

No strings on the guitar, so it's a gumband (rubberband for those of you who never lived with a Pittsburgher).

It's there to hold the bridge, which only rests of the posts, onto the guitar by applying a load onto the tailpiece holding it onto it's posts :D :D

Yup,
Elastic band (or rubber band :) ) holding the bridge on and the tailpiece on as well.

The first shots were before I had the nut fit and cut and no strings.

see that,
that's why I love music; the arts and engineering.
Till the day you die you'll be learning. I love so much to learn! The library has always been a great friend.

What a simplistic but great idea, half a century old and never new that little trick.
Great, thanks all!!!

The analine dye stain is rubbed onto the bare wood to saturate the grain. Then, I build up a few clear coats - and then add a wee bit of the same coolor to the lacquer and spray a few tinted coats.

The stain on the wood highlights the grain, and the stain in the clear (very little mind you) give it even more depth and makes it really pop.

AJC

PS I wanted to spray the headstock to match but he wanted it left natural.

I'd like to try that on a Deluxe flame maple cab I have here that's gong to The Netherlands. Just pop the flames, no colour added.

If you want to just make the figure stand out, use a natural danish oil (like Watco oil or Deft Danish oil) first, let dry a few days and then proceed with your finishing.

The oil really gets the woodgrains to stand out - something to do with how the light reflects I think since the oil penetrates into the wood surface while the finish like urethane or lacquer more or less sits on the surface.

Well, it looks like this one will be coming home to me!

The guy I built it for told me he absolutely loves it for the feel, playability and sound. However, the top isnt as "flamed" as he was hoping and there are some small worming areas in the maple (yeah, they are on most 59' LP's too duh!) he doesnt like.

The Hamer he was supposed to trade me for has a very evenly flamed, defect-less top. But he doesnt like the feel of the neck.

So, he is keeping the guitar he likes the looks of and not the feel, and sending back the guitar I made to his specs, and he loves the feel of :)

Wow, thats hard for me to understand. I guess I will have to kick some ass with that guitar in the bar myself (I am not at all upset by the way, I gave the option to not proceed with the deal and will honour that - the thing is, I actually wanted to keep my own guitar anyhow... so maybe its fate?)

I just cant for the life of me understand how some people need to play the perfect looking guitar, and/or the headstock decal... and cant look at what the instrument is supposed to do, make music and feel great in your hands...

Oh yeah, he also said he wasnt thrilled with the single piece honduran body - as the grain looked kind of funny... Damn, you cant please some people... I mean, its a SINGLE PIECE of HONDURAN MAHOGANY with gorgeous grain!

Guy sounds like a real pain in the ass.

I would have made him sign some form of binding contract prior to the build. Really sucks to get jerked around like that.

O well I guess you have a amazing new guitar for yourself.

Sheesh, has the guy EVER looked at a piece of real wood

They're all different, that's the nice thing about wood :D :D

If he doesn't appreciate the inherent good looks of that back, he doesn't deserve the guitar   And the top isn't bad either :P :P

Ahh he isnt a PITA - I gave him the option to nt trade me....

Now I got an email saying he isnt sure what to do, he loves how the guitar plays and feels but he wants a more perfect top, wood wise.

I will leave it up to him to decide what to do, I will be happy with either guitar. :)

I just dont want to send them back and forth too many times.... Canada post already has enough of my $$.. lol!
