does anyone ever play with metal picks?

i've got a blowtorch and a ton of random easily meltable metal and someone suggested that I make some metal picks out of it, and I was just wondering if anyone's ever done that or if it's just a Really Dumb Idea.

i'm going nuts waiting for work to finish so i can go home and work on getting the lightning working... I'm going to throw together a little signal injector so i can probe my crappy old discman into the signal path and see if anything happens.

after i double-check all the wiring again, of course.

anyway... metal picks?

Brian May uses a coin as have others. Metal is really good for a shark, well, metallic bite.

There are a couple of metal picks I can think of. I once used copper picks called HotLicks. This goes back to the 80s, but they had a very nice attack. I especially liked them with high action and heavy strings for jazz fusion and the like.

I think you can still buy brass picks called Cymbolics or something like that. They are supposedly made out of old cymbols. I think you can even get them from AMS or MF. I haven't tried those, but they have a good rep.

Essentially, any metal pick will give you a brassy sounding attack on the strings. This is very conducive to certain types of music to be sure.

They are made from pre 1964? US quarters that are mostly silver. As such, they are much softer than guitar strings (nickel or steel of some kind). This means that they are easy on strings. This is not true of present day coins or stainless steel pics. Both will chew the living $#!T out of you strings. The quarters will not. In fact, after a bit of playing the edge of the Mojo pics gets filed into a very sharp edge.

I used a mojo pick when I recorded Summertime for the Trinity web site sound clips.
