A friend of mine found this amp sitting by the roadside on garbage day. Its a 1961 Epiphone EA-35T Devon Tremolo, which I understand is identical to the same year Gibson GA-8T.

Overall its in good condition (the tolex is near mint once I cleaned all the dust and nicotine off it) and the grill is also in great shape. The crome control panel is pitted and some of the lettering is worn off, and unfortunately it is missing the back panel and foot switch. So far I have torn it apart and cleaned it and will put new filter caps in it (I need to replace that big one as its leaking!) and of course a 3-prong plug. Check out the pics!

Hmm, doesnt look the same. My schematic has 2 6EU7, 2 6BQ5 & 1 6CA4 recto. What'sthe tube line up .

BTW, not close to a Gibson Gibson GA-8 FWIW.

The tube line up is: 1x 12AX7, 2x 6BM8 & 1x 5Y3

It is the same as the very first GA-8T Discoverer Tremolo.

Who would have thought there would be such a difference with just the letter T. Glad you discivered the info too.

When I get it fixed up I will try to get some sound clips to share. I'm curious to hear it too!

So I was searching the net for capcitors.... the one cap is a 20 MF @ 25 VDC.... no problem, I have some 33 MF @ 35 V I will use for that one - I used those to replace the 25 @ 25s in my 2 Supers and they worked great! But the problem looks like that big cap, which is 3 in 1.

It is actually a 20, 10, 10 @ 450 V. I couldn't find anything like it online at the Tubestore, turretboards.com, BBQ, Mojo, etc. The closest I found was a 4 in 1 cap that was 40, 20, 20, 20 and another that was 4 x 20. It shouldn't be a big deal to go with something like that unless anyone else knows where I can find a 20, 10, 10. If the paper tube for the original cap was in better shape I would just hollow it out and put 3 caps inside it and keep the original look. Any other suggestions?

Yes, CE Manufactured FP type can cap. CEDist part number C-EC20-10-10-10 is a 20-10-10-10 @450 multi-section cap. Try Antique Electronics, their retail arm, or you could just replace with individual caps.

I forgot about Antique Electronics... that cap looks like it would be a little better because its smaller then the 40-20-20-20 I mentioned in my last post. Thanks for the tip Stephen!

I ended up replacing the cap can with individual caps, as my dad had the ones I needed in his parts stash. All new electrolytics and wired up a spare switch I had sitting around for the tremolo, put it all back together and man does this amp sound sweet!

At around half volume, its got a great slightly distorted tone (almost a bit tweed-ish with a bit more bite) or you can crank it to full volume and get a little more dirt. The tremolo sounds great too. Will get up a couple more pics soon as well as a sound clip or two if you're interested!

I still have to get around to recording some clips of this amp. I love it. I've been playing it more then any of my other amps. And while I've never been into using a lot of tremolo, I use it a lot on this amp cause its one of the nicest sounding tremolo I've heard. This amp sounds great at clean volume levels, or at full out to get some good crunch. I love it! Also sounds great no matter what guitar I plug into it.... Strat, Tele, Les Paul, PRS, Jaguar, they all sound great!

I have put a new speaker in it tho... the original has started rattling every time I play an A. It now has a 30 watt BBQ vintage style alnico (equivalent to a P12Q I think it is?). It sounds even better with this new speaker as it gives it a little more volume, and a bit more power in the lows and mids.
