Hey all,
I have a Premier Twin-8 and have an interesting problem.
When I initially got it. I brought it up on the variac. After 5 min. of playing I shut it back down to see how the caps were performing. All electrolytic s were leaking. And I mean bad.
So I replaced the 5 caps with new ones. I used Mallory's.
When I turned her back on she didn't work except for a low buzz.
My question to all is:
The original caps had a positive side and the Mallory's do not. Would this be important to the originality of the circuit. Or was I right?
At a loss here.

Electrolytics have a polarity so not sure what Mallorys you used. They would need to go in correct polarity of course.

They can explode otherwise. [Happened to me once]

Hmmm. Sorry, I forgot how too.
Anyway. What caps where leaking was the coupling's. They were paper wax, and leaking like a sieve. 1st time I've ever seen that happen before. It was awesome, no kidding. Watching liquid actually pour out of a cap, well, it's amazing.
So, obviously they had to be replaced. Shut it off and replaced the 5 caps, but it didn't work. Left well enough alone as I kept getting sick. Haven't been back to the Twin till now.
The power filters are on a cancap. Sorry for explaining that initially.
Update:
Here's the "DUH".
I grounded the 100uf/50v to ground on the +.
Have reversed and am rewiring now. Let's see.
I hate forgetting.
Let ya know, I'm dying to hear this..
Coco make an amp out of this. I'll put up clips when she's wailing again.

Turned back on and if I touch the guitar, I get the hum, big time. This would be a ground loop. now just have to find it, lol.

So which Premier Twin-8 version is it? Power tube type, year of Mfg., rectifier etc.?

In an old amp it can be many things.

Does it hum with guitar plugged in? If it does, can be guitar or defective input jack - If the input jack is not making good contact to the guitar cord shield, it'll hum. If it hums without a guitar plugged in then lots of stuff but check.

Faulty power supply filter caps. Cap Job!!

Poor AC Chassis Ground at Power Transformer - A common problem is the main ground point to the chassis. Clean & Tighten.

Please explain a little more.
I put a new AC plug in. The only place to attach the green ground (without tapping new holes) was utilizing the PT bolt (the bolt has turned that odd white/green old color (hard to explain unless you've seen it)). Could this be it?

Now I know this is going to seem so simplistic, so I apologize in advance.
I disconnected the guitar and let the amp run. There is no hum, nothing. Touching the chassis, nothing.
Is it the cable and guitar? Or still the amp?

First: Try the guitar and cable in another amp to try to determine if it's that.

The green/white color on the PT bolt is probably corrosion.

Remove the bolt, clean the chassis metal down to clean metal around where you want to put the ground and either really clean the bolt and nut or use new, you need a good connection for the ground to the chassis.

Also shows you I don't play that often because of the disease.
The Twin is up and running.
Of course now I have to fix the tone pot. Very scratchy to the point of shutting down the amp at certain settings.
Yea, Yea, I fixed my 1st amp since the stupid disease hit me.

Congrats on the fix. The tone pot should be easy.

Measure to see if there is DC on that tone pot. If so, change the coupling cap in front of it. It could also be leaky.

What an amp. Talk about whatever was on hand.
On the tone pot there is an .003 and .005 metal film. Both look broke. And DC is leaking. I have a .0047 Mallory on hand, but I'll have to hit the Shack for the .003. I need some contact lube anyway.

Bought a new can of contact lubricant from the Shack.
I'm hoping that the pots just require this. Less change because of the amp.
I didn't say it before, but the pots were so bad they were squealing toward the end of the revolution. Pretty bad.
So that's what I'm doing now.

If you have DC voltage on the pots, you'll ned to fix the caps as well.
