With the discussion of a 6V6 Powered Plexi, I have to talk about my all-time favorite Marshall. I had a couple of Plexis in 70's a couple of Metalafced 1987s. But my favorite was the 2204 Master Volume 2204 that was made between '75 & '81. I have a Turret Board already made up and chassis (Though I may have Nik make be a Special Combo Chassis from the 18 Watt Combo sized Chasss) to build one of these when I have the time.

It'll be 6V6 Powered, Fixed/Adjustible Biased, and I'll prolly use an 18 Watt Output Tranny.

There's no doubt in my mind that this amp will absolutely kick butt.

So this will be a 6V6, 18W 2204 based design. That's cool. I find the gain of those (I have 2203) can be a bit over the top, but with a 6V6, that might tame it a bit. Keep us posted!

Wow!

I can't wait either....Mac, after my lightning build...I'm going to build a 6v6 plexi...and I'm *very* interested to hear your results with this thing...

save the schematic, too! :)

I assume you're going to use a SS recto and fixed bias?

Stephen;

This is based on the on the JMP50 2204, not a JMC800/50 2204. The Gain is just a bit more than a Metal Faced JMP50 1987. If anything, the 6V6s will sound more like EL34s than the 6550's that were stock in these amps.

Thanks!!!

B&V;

Yep, the SS recto is on the Left of the board in the pic. The Bias Pot is two E-caps over.

I have the schemo. Email me and I'll send it to ya.

Thanks!!!

What I mean is with 6V6s you can actually CRANK it and still have some hearing left :shock:

Steve;

What's amazing is how great a set of 6V6s sound in a Marshall Circuit. Amazing!!!

A friend of mine used to get an amazing clean twangy surf tone from a 2204 and a Les Paul. He used the low-gain input, and the Les Paul was a Deluxe with the skinny humbuckers and a Bigsby, and it had a maple neck. But the result was about as far from Jimmy Page, or Slash, as you can get with a Les Paul and a Marshall.

Are the 2203/2204 the ones with the Hi and Lo inputs, where the Hi switches in an extra triode gain stage?

If so, those are very underrated as CLEAN amps if you use the Lo input. I used to have a friend who used one for Surf music, and it was amazing. And that was with a Les Paul Deluxe, maple neck & Bigsby.
