I normally ship a built amp with the tubes removed and packaged up. I've never had any problems until recently when I got word that an amp was not behaving 100% on start-up . I know it was working fine when the tubes were removed for shipping as it was tested and broken in for over a week.

So I'm wondering, how other builders ship a built Amp? Tubes IN or OUT? Any thoughts?

Ok, well, V2 [an EH BTW] was replaced and the problem has gone away.

The sIII is on it's way to Savannah, Ga. to attend the St. Patrick's festival. I am told it's the 2nd largest in the U.S. !!!! The crowds have been averaging in the 600,000 range for the last few years. The River Street area where the stages are admits 125,000.

This is a very good question. If you poke around, you will find a lot of amp companies use Sovtek 12AX7WA or 12AX7WBs. Not because they sound great, but because they are bullet-proof. Just take a look at rjgtr's web site and you will see some reviews that really capture the sound of those tubes. I'm convinced you could heat them up, then beat them with a 2x4 and they wouldn't go microphonic. The only reason so many amp companies use them is because they are indestructible and won't break during shipping.

In my case, I usually ship amps with the tubes installed. I can't imagine any other form of packaging could be much better. Unfortunately, I just had an amp damaged by DHL. The tubes survived, but the cabinet did not fare so well...
