I'm starting to gather parts for a Vox AC15 project. I was looking at the West Labs 15-watt transformer set, which they claim is a drop-in replacement for the AC15 set. They certainly seem to be a lot more reasonably priced than they Heyboer set at Mojo, or the Mercury Magnetics set. Heck, the whole West set costs less than one Mercury output transformer.

Does anyone have any impression of how the West transformers stack up against the competition, as far as sound quality goes?

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot - since this is the Matchless Lightning transformer set, and the Matchless uses a 4K primary impedance for the output transformer, does the West Labs set have 4K, or 8K plate-to-plate impedance? Did Matchless use an 8K transformer and then just mis-match (or re-label...) the secondary taps?

The West Labs are very good transformers. We also have the OEM transformers. They are listed in the Want Ads.

As far as mismatching goes, while they are listed at 4K, you can wire them to be 8K if you want. You have to use double the impedance of the speaker though. For example, you can take the 16 ohm tap (at 4K) and put an 8 ohm speaker on it & get 8K primary impedance; 8 ohm tap, use 4 ohm speaker.
