I 'd like to make a dummy load. I have these resistors laying around. Like to use them.

1-200watt 8ohm
1-100watt 8ohm
1-100watt-4ohm

These are power resistors(there're huge), and have an aluminum casing.

Anyone know how to transform these into a really nice dummy load.

Thanks,
Jac

I think your only concern will be heat dissipation. If there is a big flat side in direct contact with the resistor then you should be able to mount a heatsink to it. These can be found for free in old discarded computers. They're usually aluminum blocks with many narrow fins mounted to the main processor.

Almost everything you need can be found in a busted computer! (can you tell I'm a geek yet?) Sheet metal, self tapping screws, medium gauge wire... etc.

Good places to find busted computers are behind apartment buildings or townhouses on garbage day.

Maybe someone else has a "nicer" solution. But this is the free solution.

I use 8-10 watt power resistors epoxied to a heat sink as a dummy load but I think a 100 watt 8 ohm resistor can stand alone!

do I just hook up a jack to it the epoxy to a heat sink then mount everything on a piece of plywood, using the 8 ohm 100watt. Is that about it?
Thanks
Or wait why not just use the 200watt can't imagine anything blowing that.

I guess hooking up a jack right to the resistor is no problem?
Here's a link to what I have.

With the aluminum casing should be no problem with heat dissapation.

Holly crap. You were right, they are huge! That thing should handle heat just fine.

You might want to mount both 8ohm resistors to each other, or in one project box and use one (1) switched jack and one (1) mono jack for the inputs. That way you can have a switchable 8ohm and 16ohm load for whatever project you might be working on.

I have a schematic (courtesy of coco) which describes this type of wiring if you're interested.

I wasn't kidding, now that's a resistor  I'd like to see the wiring scem for it. In the meantime I wired up the 200watt . I'll upload a pic later. Amazing what you can do in 20 mins.

Oopps. I forgot it was for 16ohm loads. But in anycase, this is how I have my 2x12 wired up. I run one when I don't want to piss off my neighbours and I run both when I do!

Adapt as needed.

That's okay, I like the layout, Thanks.
I'm going to try something different. I'll post a couple pics when I'm done.
The idea I came up with might actually be marketable. We'll see
