I recently got a good deal on a Power transformer. It's a 425-0-425 hammond. I'm wondering about the different ways of dropping that B+ down to usable small amp levels. I'm sure there's more ways to do it than this but the 2 i know how to do are:
1) zener diodes between the centre tap and ground
2) large wattage resistor in series before the first filter cap.

My question is mainly with regards to the 1st method. How much power do the zener's need to be able to handle if i'm going to be using the tranny to power say a 30watt amp?

That is big, my gut feel would be get rid of it on E-Bay and get something closer to the range.

You could devise power scaling for it. It's a big drop.

I think (and I don't know if this is doable for this much voltage) the way to do this is to line up enough zeners on each secondary line to total 50v per side...

say 2-20v and 1-10v zener per side...
