I thought it would be a good start to getting some thoughts down on various sepakers and what you think of them. And also what you have in your rig(s) with your amp.

Tone Tubby by A Brown Soun

Feature cones made of Hemp insead of Paper.

The higher bending stiffness of hemp cones (relative to paper cones) results in higher flexural rigidity. Higher bending stiffness extends the cone's high frequency and operating bandwidth. Hemp fibers are longer than paper wood fibers. The increased fiber length increases the tear resistance as well as fracture resistance of cones made from hemp.

The speed of sound through hemp paper is higher than through ordinary wood-based paper. This decreases the phase difference between sound emanating from the cone apex and the cone edge. The decreased phase difference means less sound cancellation and more dispersion of acoustical energy.

What this means is that Hempcone produces more frequencies than you have ever heard from a paper cone. It has more bass response, better mids and a sweeter high range unlike a paper cone's shrill highs and lack of true bass response. There is no cone cry or ghost notes with the Hempcone.

The Hempcone likes to breath and work best when not sealed in a sealed cabinet. For closed back applications the Ceramic Hempcone Tone Tubbys seem to work best.

12" 32 Oz Alnico Magnet. Hempcone 8/16 ohms 40 watts tube; 50 solid state.

12" 60 Oz Ceramic Magnet. Hempcone. 8/16 ohms 40 watts tube, 80 solid state.

The Alnico Hempcone is a bit warmer and smoother where the Ceramic is a bit brighter, with more of an edge and more clean headroom.

I have a mix an Alnico speaker with a Ceramic. It's called "The Bomb". It's the best of both worlds.

If you have to choose one and you want a bright one, choose the Ceramic for its edge and clean headroom. If you want a full, smooth, sweet compressed sound, go for the Alnico.

Legend 12216 - 12 inch, 20 watts - ALNICO magnet - 16 ohms - based on Jensen .
Comments: great clean sound, lots of bottom, not good for high gain amps, distortion sound is too midrangy, best for Clean and Blues.

Legend M128 - 12 inch, 80 watts - 38oz. Ceramic magnet - 8 ohms - a modern lead speaker.
Comments: good clean (a little dull), bottom OK (a little weak), distortion sound OK (a little midrangy) Average all around OK

Legend GB128 -12 inch, 50 watts -38 oz. Ceramic magnet -8 ohms -based on Celestion GreenBack.
Comments: great distortion (smooth, and breaks up very naturally, not harsh), good bottom, good clean, Good all around

Legend V128 -12 inch, 80 watts -38 oz. Ceramic magnet -8 ohms -based on Celestion Vintage 30.
Comments: very good distortion (not quite as good as GB, it’s a little bright and has less bottom), clean sound OK, Average all around.

Legend 1258 - 12 inch 50watts - 34 oz. Ceramic magnet - 8 ohms - based on Fender THE TWIN.
Comments: great clean, full bottom, clear and bright, sounds full, distortion sound is just plain ugly (brittle and nasally) best suited for clean players

Celestion

Vintage 30 - 12 inch, 60 watts - Ceramic magnet - 8 and 16 ohm.
Comments: excellent distortion (a little fuzzy), warm and full, OK clean (dark), loud (very efficient) good all around speaker

G12 - 12 inch, 15 watt - Alnico Magnet - 8 and 16 ohm - Reissue of Vox Bulldog.
Comments: excellent distortion, excellent clean.

G12M-25 -12 inch, 25 watt -Ceramic magnet - 8 and 16 ohms - Reissue of famous “Greenback”.
Comments: excellent distortion, very good clean, lots of bottom, a little bright, excellent all around speaker.


BBQ

Blue Dog -12 inch, 30 watt -Alnico Magnet -8 and 16 ohm -Based on Bulldog.
Comments: excellent distortion, excellent clean, sounds very close to Bulldog. Not as smooth and it’s brighter).

Excellent writeup Stephen;

Do you have any experience with the 10" tone tubby's in comparison with the 12"?

Would it be safe to assume the TT's in a bomb with a bluesbreaker style cab would be good for most amp styles? (IE: 5E3, 18w, TC-15) I'd like to only have one cab with several heads.

A bomb would be even more versatile if wired up so you can use either one as an individual 16 ohm speaker or both together as a 8 ohm pair. (or 8 /4 ohms)

I have never heard anything, from any amp yet, that did not sound great with the bomb including Fender, Z, VOX, Marshall.

A bomb is two tone tubby alnico's and two ceramics matched together; this also applies with one of each... It's a term i believe stephen coined and tone tubby liked enough to keep.

John Harrison [Mr. Tone Tubby] created the term bomb for a 212. Lbet & I coined H-Bomb which applies to a 412. You should hear that one!!
