Are you going to see much difference in tone between the two values? I ask as i've just won 10 NOS example off the bay for a quid and figured they might be a good future buy when the 22nF become too expensive to use in clones.

Hi Wicksy,
I think it will be tough to hear a difference.
You may also want to parallel them with some 4.7nF that still can be found for cheap, this will bring you back to about 22nF.

My next build is asking for 5*10nF that are awfully expensive, I'll use 15nF there, that I have on hand.
Zaphod Phil told me I won't be able to hear the difference.

For that small difference I wouldn't even bother. Most of these caps are built to 20% tolerances, so the 22nF ones could be anything between 18nF and 26nF anyway. And typical coupling cap values in vintage amps can be anywhere between 10nF and 22nF. The way they were designed wasn't very scientific.

Nice to know about the broad range of values.

Some months ago I found some on eBay.
150 for 44€
About 20 of each 22nf, 0.1uf, 47nF...... no 10nF but some 15nF

Even cheaper than Mallory  8) :D

since I made the same kind of deal with the blue ones......

Nice deal! I'm on the case of a further ten 18nF mustards. Hopefully i can snag them cheap as well. I have some pulls i got from an old Carlsbro and a Sound City PA chassis i got off Ebay. That yielded about ten 22nF caps in total as each channel used them plus the coupling caps in the main circuit.

wicksy,
I just replaced the caps in my bassman they were originally 25mfd and I replaced them with 22mfd and I did notice a difference in tone now it has a more british sound like a jcm or blues breaker it has a more brighter sound it still sounds good .but it is a bassman and I want the original tone. but I guess it doesn't matter as I am selling the amp

But you're talking about electrolytic caps here. To be honest the change in tone is more likely the effect of those caps being newer and more efficient, plus modern made electrolytic caps usually have lower effective series resistance (ESR) than vintage ones.

That might be how old Leo Fender wanted it to sound. Tired old electrolytics will sound different to new ones  Where do you think the Marshall sound came from? I assume you're talking about the pre-amp tube cathode caps?
