Found it!

The problem was the wire that goes to pins 3 and 8 on V3 (the PI tube). The wire goes through pin 3 and jumps over to pin 8, and as the socket heats up, it was stretching the jumper and putting stress on the pin 3 solder joint - which I guess wasn't good - so intermittent contact and the PI tube was cutting in and out.
I properly terminated and jumped the pins (added a bit of stress relief in curving the jumper), and it works!
Just starting to explore the sounds - next is to install in the head cab.
