From the layout or schematics, how can I determine which preamp tube is the phase inverter? Should is be a matched and balanced tube? (I'm assuming its v3, closest to the power tubes)

Yes V3 is the phase inverter. As to balanced...it's been a source of discussion for years. IMPO you don't need or want a balanced PI. Musical instrument amps were never intended to be "high fidelic". There is so much imbalance in the circuit surrounding the PI and o/p tubes that you'd have to be quite maticulous to get a true balanced o/p.

have to agree with stoo on this. Dont think Jim or Leo looked for matched triodes back inthe day!
