I've got an 18 watt V6 amp that is having a strange problem. All is well when I select the 6V6 tubes, however when I have the EL84's selected the speaker cab sounds as if the speakers are torn especially with lower notes. I have checked all the wiring and solder connections all looks good. Components seem to be OK as well. I've tried another set of tubes with no joy. I'm think everything in front of the output tube selection switch has to be good since the 6V6's sound good. Any input or suggestions would be most appreciated

Does the EL84 cathode voltage check out? Check the grid resistors are correct for the EL84 set up and the switch is wired correctly.

What should I expect the cathode voltages to be? This is the second one of these amps I have built but only this one has this problem. The grid resistors are 8.2K ohm. As far as the switch does it matter which wires I have wired to the center and which to the pole? I don't have access to the first one to compare the voltages any guidance is most appreciated. Thanks!

Approx 12 on the EL84, approx 20 on the 6V6.

For the switch, follow the layout diagram in the resource section if you dont have one. You just have to make sure that the cathodes are connected appropriately with the switch, i.e. dont reverse them from the schematic!!!

By reversing do you mean connecting the 6V6 tubes where the EL84's should be connected and vice versa? Thanks!

Yes. The cathode voltages look good too. Check wiring against the Resource layout.

Also check for a solid zero volts on the EL84 grids.
