Hi all,

I've been researching different 18W kits and have decided on the sIII, which I hope to be able to buy in the next couple of weeks. I've read through all the posts here and listened to all of the sound clips and I'm really foaming at the mouth for this thing.

Anyway, I wanted to throw out a couple of questions for you guys:

First of all, I assume I'm going to have to attenuate this thing in order to crank it at home. Do any of y'all use an attenuator with your sIII? What do you recommend? I used to have a 2204 that I used a Hot Plate with and it didn't seem to suck the tone too bad, but I don't have any experience with other soaks. Of course transparency is king here. The Ultimate Attenuator sounds interesting, but man is it pricey!

Secondly, what about transformers? Is there a consensus here on what's the best sounding? Coco had posted the results of an OT shootout he did over at 18watt and said the Radio Spares Clone was far and away the best. Is that part of the $150 set that he has listed in the kit order section?

Thanks!

I'm on my second sIII build at the moment, you are going to really love it. I am using the Trinity set for this build which I smuggled back from Canada with a pair of Tone Tubby speakers, the people I have spoken to seem to think they are great. I don't attenuate at all, I crank and drown out the complaints ;-)

Yeah, Stephen I've read through that post, among many others :) . After doing a little more digging over at 18watt I see from your add in the dealers section that the kit you offer for $150 does indeed include the Heyboer built RS clone OT that I was interested in. That's what I'll be getting when I order.

If you are looking for an attenuator, see this post by Legin

Quote:
Have you tried adapting an attenuator from a Rat Shack wall volume control? There are a few people (including Dr Phil) that believe that is still the most transparent and good value way.
