I tried swapping my 12AX7 for the TMB channel on my sIII for a 12AX7-C and it gave less gain and more headroom.

Anybody tried any of the following:

-12AT7
-12AU7
-12AV7
-12AY7

Tubes can make a HUGE difference in tone. It will be interesting to see what people have tried. Pretty well stuck with 12AX7s - JJs and Shuguang for new and NOS RCA, Amperex, etc. for personal amps.

Yes, each of those tubes has it's characteristics. Not only it's amplification factor or mu, but plate resistance, interelectrode capacitance, etc. This means that the changing of the tube brings effects more complex than the mere changing of amplification factor, but all the other characteristics have their influences to some extent as well. Experiment, as someone once said, if it sounds good, it is!
