My current tube setup is like this:

V1 - Telefunken ECC83
V2 - Brimmar ECC83 (milspec)
V3 - JJ
V4V5 Phillips EL84
V5 JJ EZ81

I need a phase inverter tube for v3 of my 18 watt plexi. Tell me, is this
a tube position that effects the tone of the amp? I know its job of
the phase inverter will effect the tone but what I am asking is do the
tonal characteristics intrinsic to the tube come out in this position?
Like it would in v1 or v2? Let me know what your choices are for this position.

Also, a description of how each tube position shapes the amps tone would be useful as well.

Thanks and Happy Holidays

I would say it is the least critical. Early tube positions influence the sound the most, but the PI position is where you can change the sound from a clean to drity amp as well. The JJ would be fine there IMO

Clean to dirty via v3? Thats interesting. I noticed my amp is mostly crunch
and not very dirty from that that point on. Sounds pretty good actually.
But its cool to know I can change the gain structure by changing out v3
tubes. Is there a tube brand that can typically be used to get a more dirty
signal?

Based on a friends suggestion I ordered a few Raytheon 12ax7s to try in
v3. From what I've heard this tube may work out well in some of the early
positions to.

It depends on where you want the breakup - Preamp or closed to power amp. LEt us know how the Raytheon's work out. The Chinese tubes seem to have extra gain.

Hopefully the Raytheons will be here this week. I'll let you know how it goes.
