I was just wondering what the main tonal differences are and if it would be redundant to have both the sIII and the switching 18 watter?

Isn't the V6 basically the sIII with the switchable output? I seem to recall it being called the sIIIV6...

but with the other tubes does it make a lot of difference in tone?

WHat I need to do is hear all the 18 varients.. :) I might get my chance sooner than I thought...

Oh - sorry man! I thought you had a V6 - you seem to have all the others! :)

I have only the sIII (my first Trinity build back in Dec. 06) which I actually modded to some plexi-specs last year.

I am currently digging the 18 again after pretty much playing the 15 exclusively for the past year... so I was just thinking if the one with two sets of tubes would be something different enough to spend the $$ on.

You can never have enough tonal options, right??

Why don't you just mod your 18 to V6 specs? I did that with mine. Also, the 18 I built for Fortis was a Plexi with switchable power tubes, and it sounds absolutely killer!

Pretty straight-forward mod, but will likely involve re-wiring your pre-amp sockets if you used the original Trinity layout with the first pre-cut 9-pin hole on the far right empty. You'll need to move the pre-amp tubes over one position to free up a second hole for the 6V6 sockets next to the EL84's. Drilling out the 8-pin holes can be a pain, but I'm betting you have the required bit to do that (I didn't so it took some elbow grease).

Other than that it's just to drill out the back plate for the switch (the chassis is already pre-drilled for a switch there). No other chassis or cabinet mods required.

I think there's a couple of pics of the mod I did here somewhere.
