Got it up and running, and it SMOKES!!

Just out of curiousity, how much noise reduction would I get if I changed to metal film, and is there much of a change in tone? In other words, is there really something to the carbon comp thing, or is it just the "mojo juice."

Short discussion in the manual and posted here.

It's not just mojo juice, but you can quieten it down a bit.

So, has anyone tried any resistor subs to reduce hiss & could recommend a mod or two?

Changing resistors of 100k and above to 1W metal film should help reduce a good bit of hiss. Lower noise preamp tubes can also help a lot. For example, New Sensor's "Mullard" 12AX7s have lower noise levels, and sound real good into the bargain. :D

You compared those to a tung sol Phil? I thought you were a NOS only guy.

I almost entirely use NOS tubes in the amps I build for my own use. However, I've had to admit these new fake Mullards from New Sensor do actually sound pretty sweet. In appearance they also have the same "ladderplate" style anodes as my NOS Mullard and Brimar 12AX7s. So it looks like they have reproduced Mullard's electrode geometry, or at least made a pretty good attempt at it.

Apparently there are some fake Mona Lisa paintings out there too, that even art experts have trouble telling apart from the real one.
