Not at all. I'd say easier because:

a) you don't have to get the tremolo 'tremming' and;
b) you dont have to fight with the 'oroginal' TMB squeal.

Thanks for the comments. s2 & I collaborated on this and we think it's a winner.

A couple of questions:
- Any particular reason why the gain resistors are zip-tied together?
A. Only to elimainate any rattle. In this case, only if the customer chooses to leave them in. If one is removed (cut out), the gain drops

- The layout indicates linear pots for Mid and Treb, but the schematic specifies Log/Audio. Which is it?
A. Good catch! I missed that one. Linear for Mid and Treb.

- is that buss grounded on the right?
A. Yes.

I'll update the schematic. Thanks!

coco, thanks for the answers. Always happy to lend a third pair of eyes.

Hey Stephen!

What are you doing with those zip tied resistors? If I am seeing it right, you have two 2.7K cathode resistors in parallel to yield about 1.4K. So, once can be clipped out to reduce the gain of the circuit a little. That's a pretty nifty feature. Have you thought about doing the same thing with a 25u cap? You know, leave it in for less linear response or more gain or clip it out for the opposite? Or, you could put it on a footswitch a la the old JCM800 boost mod.

Just a thought...

A. Giving the customer a choice of sound. You got it, if it's too gainy, clip out one resistor. (see below)

A. Good eyes! I thought so to. It's all about choice & satisfaction.

A. Yes and a footswitch or switch was a consideration. We're going to try something out on lbets sIII mod, and see how it lasts long term. Then incorporate it. If you want to suggest some values that will make a noticeable difference, I'm all for options!

Tell you what Stephen, this thread is too tame, those boys on the parallel thread over a 18Watt sure know how to party ;-)

Yep, emotions are running a little high over there. I guess you did something right! :D

I thought the sIII clips were a good sampling. I understand the logic behind just using dry clips, but the fact is that the choice of mics, positioning of mics, mixer (if used), soundcard, recording software, computer, gain and level settings, etc. all influence the sound too. So, I don't really see what all that fuss was about.

Anyway, I've been following this and am anxious for the chassis to become available. Will you be selling unpopulated boards also?

Thanks,
bob

well, with respecting the 'kiss and makeup' that happened yesterday, I'll refrain from commenting....only to say that I thought Lawrence's use of effects in the clips did not detract from what I thought was a very clear amp recording. The amount of reverb that was on the presented clips was extremely subtle and I felt it did not warant the negative attention...and I felt someone needed to speak up...

I'm getting prices on unpopulated boards now. Wasn't originally in the plans but a lot of people are asking, so I'll see what I can do. I'm sure I can do it. I'll post an update soon.

Lawrence is meticulous in his recording. I've watched him set it up and adjust the most minute details. He did a great job, but not everyone shares the same taste/opinions so there you go.

Onward! Upward!

Yep, agreed. If there was one guy that has done a fabulous job of showing what every amp out there can do, it's Lawrence.

I'd love to hear what the guy can do with his univalve....

Will there be any updates to the layout; if so, will you be posting an update? Clips sound great, by the way, even if they do have "subtle" amounts of reverb!!!

How close is 1.3 Stephen? I wouldn't mind starting my board today while I'm in the mood.

I know, I know, but I have a gig on 23rd October (first one since I was about eighteen) and I want a choice of amps. In fact I'd like to get a selection on stage and see what interest they generate ;-)

Finally, I have started the sIII v1.4 (no surprise version changes in the wings Stephen?). Is there a faceplate layout either to scale or with measurments on to save me drawing it out in Publisher?
