i had originally decided i would blog about the build...but then...cash got tight, so i worked slow...i didn't want to get to a point where i was done except for firing up, but didn't have coin for tubes...so i just worked slow...

i would like to thank Stephen and the board here...whether i posted a question, or the question was already posted...there is an abundance of answers here...

the amp came packaged really nicely!

i thought it was awesome that all the parts came in little baggies (which i've been re-using) with a list of components...AND...a color code chart for the resistors...it saved some time digging through my desk looking for the chart i had laminated...

Image

rather than drag it all out...i'll just post the finished wiring photos...

so...now i'm at the point of testing...so...if all goes well, i'll test at lunch time...and then maybe will be rocking it tonight (fingers crossed and knocking on wood)...

all thats left is the head shell...

Looks good from adistance.

Follow the start-up procedure and take it slow.

ok so...B+=362...things *look* good V3 is a little off, but others have posted similar voltages
p1 - 181
p2 - 43
p3 - 92
p6 - 178
p7 - 42
p8 - 92

V1 is giving me 130 at each P1 and P6 which isn't that far off

what my concern is...I'm not getting anything from P1 or P7 on V6...unless I'm measuring wrong...you measure pin to ground right?

Thats the rectifier? If so, that's AC (not DC) and you already said the B+ was good, so amp should be good.

ok...so...here are my voltages...i tried pin 4 and pin 5 on V6...but i'm guessing that the 6VAC is before the rectifier tube is placed into the circuit...cuz, i'm not getting 6...i'm getting higher...if pin 4 is supposed to be 0...with a tube...then i've got an issue, cuz its reading about 10V

anytime i touch a pin on V3 i get a pop thru the speaker cab...

here we go...
mains - 119V
B+ (w/tubes) 368V

V1
P1-130
P3-1.0
P6-127
P8-1.0

V2
P1-167
P3-1.7
P6-259
P8-172

V3
P1-183
P2-43
P3-92
P6-178
P7-42
P8-92

V4
P3-12
P7-357
P9-341

V5
P3-12
P7-355
P9-340

V6
P1-316
P3-370
P7-316

These all make it to the board on their turrets...

the problem now is...i don' have any sound at all...except for the pops...everything looks connected, and feels stiff...so now i'm confused and don't know what to do...

Voltages look ok

V3 popping means the phase inverter and output section is working. This means something is wrong in the preamp, since voltage look fine than that probably means there is something wrong with the signal wiring.

Check your shielded cable runs, input wiring and wiring to the pots.

V1 pins 1 and 6 should pop once everything is working. Same with pins 1 and 8 on V2.

ok...thx!

i just spent the last hour re-flowing grounds and everything topside of the board...

so...it would have to be either something under the board...or the wiring at the pots...which i can re-flow tomorrow...worse comes to worse...i'll snip the wires under and place them on top...

here are a couple more pics too...

You your DMM's continuity function to check the jumpers.

Are all the ground connections on the pots actually grounded?
What's happening with that brown wire on the bass pot, looks like it's touching the pots case.

Your input jacks are reversed from the layout. Can you check your input jack wiring please. The 1M resistor goes on the jack closest to the chassis, so I'm thinking, you may have made some wiring errors in this area.

See pic at:

Also, the coax shield can melt the inner conductors insulation if you are not careful and use too much heat.

hot damn it sounds awesome! its a great amp...dynamic and just sounds great...i may change it a bit for just a little more gain on the TMB channel...but we'll see...

the only thing so far is...i installed the VRM...it seems like you lose gain when you turn it down...

but hot damn...with the VRM up...and the gain and volume on 10...HEAVEN! (and hell on ear drums...remember ear plugs!!)

i know its redundant, and easy to jump to drain the caps...but i think i still am going to put the bleed resistor in...if it doesn't make a difference in tone, and makes working on the amp a little easier...why not...

soon as i get the shell for it...i'll post a finished pic...but here it is so far...

Stephen made it for me...i did the logo...its my personal logo i guess!

thanks for all the help/patience guys! loved building this and now am looking to the next one
i did the cascade mod...but not overly sold on it...the bass sounds a little fuzzy...but the channels themselves sound alright, so i don't want to mess with anything...

been rocking it the last two days...loves it!
