I have a trinity 5E3 tweed and a metro 1987 plexi kit. One is way too loud and the other is not enough for most gigs.

Going back n forth between the Trinity 18 watt with 6v6's or a JTM45 kit with 6v6's and a master volume. Thinking the JTM45 will have more headroom but might give me the same problem as the 1987 in terms of being able to get dirt at club volume. I want the traditional marshall voice but I don't want to sacrifice too much punch or bass. Any thoughts?

Have you messed around with putting a pair of JJ6v6s in the 1987?

I did try some 6v6's in the 50 water but it cooked one of em. Not sure what brand they were but supposedly they were rated to take the voltage.

Supposedly the JJs can handle 400+ volts. Did you rebias the 6v6s in the 50?

Also ..have you investigated this route? http://www.londonpower.com/power-scalin ... fixed-bias

An 18 watt can be pretty loud. Not as much as the Plexi. I would think it Would be pretty good for most of your small to medium venues.
Yes, you could try some form of fixed bias power scaling for the Plexi and that would probably do it to. Check out the VVR for fixed bias

The JTM45 would be really loud, but not nearly as much as the 1987. Even though it's called a JTM45, it's well below a 45 watt amp. Somewhere in the 30s, depending which resource you believe. It's a nice mid point between the 18 watter and the big 50 watter.

That said, the suggestion for a VRM seems a simpler choice.

I did manage to get a pair of 6V6's in my amp yesterday. It definitely made it more manageable. I think with a master volume on top of that I should be ok...then maybe find a 2x12 instead of the 4x12.

question, what makes the 1987 that much louder than a Jtm45? Is it the solid state rec or output transformer? If I have 6V6's in my 1987 and a pair of 6V6's in a Jtm45 would the 1987 still be that much louder?

Its all about how the power/pre tubes are set up. 2 6V6 tubes in a tweed is quiet when compared to 2 6V6 in a TRIWATT is one example. Same tubes different set up.
Did you re bias your tubes in this new set up?

That's good. Do you know the primary impedance of your OT?

You might want to check out my recent 18W build

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3393

I was also trying to go for a JTM45/Plexi in an 18W package. Worked out quite nicely if I may say so. It's been the only amp I've been playing the past few months.
