I was thinking that my 18watt was not my thing. Seems like it had NO headroom, and would never sound good clean. Turns out there is an easy fix. Pulling the V1 12aX7 and putting in a 5751 made it bit more to my liking. Then I tried a 12AY7 and I really like that result. Gives the amp way more spank, much tighter, and much louder. Using a lower gain tube in V1 gives the MV control a usable value, and offers the opportunity for preferred (to me) barky power tube breakup (unlike the fizzy pre-amp buzz), and gives the opportunity for using pedals without creating a mushroom cloud of noise.

I'm still a bit torn between the 5751 and the 12AY7, the 5751 might have a bit more in the harmonic department, but the 12AY7 gives a smoother breakup.

Next step is to re-voice the tone controls a bit.

Still this amp sounds good loud but its still hard to love when its not splitting my ears. I suppose its good that I have a few more amps to use in quiet mode.

Interesting. I think thats a resonable thing to do to get more headroom easily. We developed the sIII with some more headroom in mind and it works pretty well. You might consider modding into and sIII on the TMB channel.

Only a few components! :D

If you want a list of tweaks for tone, I can send you a pdf of suggestions.
