You can plug 2 cabinets into a Trinity 18. So you could plug each 8 ohm 1x12 into the amp and set the impedance switch to 4 ohms.

Sorry..perhaps I have misunderstood. If you have 2 cabinets and each is 8 ohms, you can plug both into the 18. They will be in parallel now, so 8||8 is 4 ohms. If both speakers are in the same cabinet and and you have the option of individual wiring then the same situation exists if each has it's own jack. If they can be connected in series inside the cabinet then you'd plug into the 18 and set the impedance switch to 16 ohms. As to which is "better"...both are electrically correct and your ears will be the judge.

Some people like 16 ohms because it 'uses' all the OT windings. I like to build combos at 8 ohms.

You can't make an 8 ohm cabinet with 2 8 ohm speakers. It's going to be 16 in series or 4 in parallel. If you buy two new speakers it'll probably be best to get 2 16's and put them in Parallel. Don't see a lot of 4 ohm speakers.

PS. You can run a "detuned" cabinet. Put 1 8 ohm speaker in the 2x12 cabinet and leave the other hole open. This only works in a closed back cabinet. Supposed to sound good in a deeper cabinet.

I would put the seam under the bottom of the cabinet.
