So today, along with another head cab for a TC-15, I tolexed TRIWATTs new home! Pics soon, but a dead ringer for a small HIWATT.

OK, as I had kind of suspected there was a small grounding issue in the negative feedback circuit. That was an easy one to fix. Now everything works like it should. :D

How do you think the OT is managing? I know we talked a lot about that. With a lot of clarity, sparkle and solid low end, it does sound promising. Wondering how clean it is without the boost engaged. And what of the Link jack.

The OT sounds real good to me. But I would like the opinion of a genuine DR owner. Without the boost stage, you can got lots of great Hiwatt cleans out of the amp. Crank it up and it does distort, Townshend style. The boost stage gives a more saturated distortion, with some edge and lots of sustain, which is great for lead playing. I also used it a lot with the Dave Gilmour Link jack, which lets you adjust the general balance of the guitar tone, much like you would with an input-jumpered Plexi.

I have to say at the moment, I'm real pleased with this amp! :D

I'm experimenting with this amp. It seems to have a lot of great tones inside its tubes. However I also found some occasional whooshing and popping noises, which wiggling the third preamp tube seemed to help alleviate. So I resoldered the socket connections under that tube, and all was fine. :D

Next for fun, I changed out the NOS JAN 12AT7 in the PI for an RCA blackplate 12AT7 from my stash. I then replaced the preamp tubes with a mongrel NOS collection of a Mullard (orange label), Brimar and Philips JAN. The amp's definition opened up further, with more sparkle and clarity than ever. :D Using the Link input jack gives a nice chimyness with a slight shimmer to the tone. At low gain settings, I think this could even make for an excellent acoustic guitar amp.

The Presence control seems to be fairly subtle in its effect, and I'm wondering if that's normal in Hiwatts, since the Presence/NFB circuit I'm using is identical to how all the DRs have it. Still tweaking some of the finer details...

There's plenty still to do to get there. But dont count on it for Christmas 2008

Hey Phil - I wouldn't say the presence control on my DR103 is "subtle", but it's definitely different than what I'm used to... On most amps I find presence to be like a "high treble", and for my tastes, makes things too brittle and painful in top end... On the Hiwatt, the presence definitely adds a toppy thing, but more than anything, seems to open up the top end - almost like lifting a veil off the tone. I don't often use presence cranked on my DR, but I could in the right context without it being painful...

So, if that's what you mean by "subtle", then I concur!!

It seems to add some "air" and sparkle to the tone when turned up, but compared to a Marshall's presence control, it does sound quite subtle.

I've also increased the voltages (440V at the 6V6s) and it seems to sound better for it.

AJC, one of the things we're doing is finding suitable transformers for the production version, especially the power transformer. So there's a bunch of things like this, plus the final tweaking that needs to be done.

I think I've got this amp to about where I want it now. Real good, mellow cleans. I found myself playing the intro to "Breathe" from Dark Side of the Moon. As you push the amp it has a very nice breakup, and you can get into Live at Leeds sounds. It also gives great, very musical guitar feedback, and now I understand how Pete Townshend got so much into feedback. This amp seems to do it very naturally. Then engage the boost stage, and it becomes a raging animal. :D

Sounds (pun intended :D ) like things are progressing well!!

How are things proceeding with the iron selection?

Looking forward to hearing how the amp compares to bgroups original :P :P
