Greetings!
Has anyone installed a VRM after the first filter cap rather than before. Just wondering if there are any noise issues or other issues of wiring it this way that anyone is aware of. Ideally I would prefer the cap between the VRM and the board, but my V6 won't allow for that by it's design.

Thanks!

Joe G

On my V6 I put the pot on the rear of the amp. I had to extend the pot wires. If you do this , keep them as short as possible and remember to braid them and cross all power wires at right angles. I wired it in series with the standby switch.
Also , Coco's layout for installing input caps did the trick on the scratchy volume control. I read somewhere that DC on the pots can demagnetize your pickups over time. So, if you notice any scratching you should go ahead and do that little operation , too.

I hope it goes well for you. You'll like it! :D

Thanks LeeMo for the info. My question is does it matter if the VRM goes before or after the 32/32 filter cap. In my build it will end up after the cap (my power supply is separate as seen here viewtopic.php?t=1392) which is opposite of the typical installation suggestions that I've seen. I wasn't sure if I would be asking for noise problems.
Thanks...
Joe G

First, you have a great looking amp going there. Now I understand why you asked the question. As for the answer, I'm totally under qualified to respond with any certainty. I'd say , "Try it" . You might get lucky. If memory serves me the guys on the SE WATT forum were putting it after the first cap on the Valve Junior. They were originally adding some diodes to kill the scratchiness. If you could contact UR-12 (Dana Hall) he might be able to shed some light on it.
Good Luck!

Personally, I think I prefer after the first filter cap, so that the voltage coming into the VVR is a little smoother.

Thanks to you both for the replies.
I'll try cap>standby>VRM>board and see how things go. This may end up being the least of my problems, but I'm enjoying the learning process.
Next time I'm building an off-the-rack amp :D

That will work. Might even be better but I never had a problem on the B+ from the standby switch to cap though. FWIW
