With the volume at noon and the gain at noon, it's VERY loud.

then it'a not the resistors. move a few tubes around & see what happens. Pull tubes from 1-3 until it stops. problem is before that tube somewhere.

Now THAT was strange...I replaced V1 and the problem persisted once the tubes heated up. Then I replaced V2, and the same thing, but along with the hiss there was some hum. Then, after I replaced V3, it was all hum, and fairly loud. Then, for the heck of it, I replaced the EL84s and the hum persisted. So I shut her down, and a few minutes later I became curious as to whether the guitar inputs were still working, so I turned the amp on again and when I flipped the standby switch the problem was gone. WTF???

Another thing - I also notice a baseline "background" hum now, the type I've come to associate with tube amps, and that wasn't there before, but I consider the amp to be functioning normally now. I think this amp has poltergeists - Stephen, were any of those parts previously owned by somebody who has since died?

Keep an ear on that one. Next time wiggle the tubes in the sockets in case the sockets are the problem. And ypu may need to break it to fix it!

Well, the hum eventually resurfaced, and wiggling V2 made the most noise, so I pulled V2 and re-installed it and the noise disappeared for a while, and came back after I played for a while. Does this seem like a faulty tube socket?

or a bad solder contact on the socket pins.
