I need to calm this 18w down; certainly the VVR is way cheaper but the hotplate could be used on all of my amps...

So I'm just wondering what the tonal differences might be..

You mean the VRM from Trinity? I'd say for $25 VRM is a a good deal!!
But I've heard the hotplate and it seems to do the job. Problem is it's specific impedance you have to buy.

Well I could get the MASS attenuator with impedance selection too..

It's the same function though?

$25 is great price. It really depends on this Fender Hot Rod DeVille... I love playing it, but at 60watts, it's too loud. Plus I love the idea of a line out.

However, with the 18w maybe ill save $100 or so and just get the VRM... It's my go to amp anyways...

If they are the same in terms of their effect on tone ill probably just go with a full on attenuator. If the VRM has some sort of benefit i may get that now and an attenuator later when money isnt so tight.

This is a simple addition. i believe that the TC15 schematic and a few of the 18 watters have this on their schematic already as an option. Check them out in "Resources".

As long as you switch in a dummy load when you use the line out, should be fine I would think...

I put a VRM in my sIII and its pretty amazing. The amp seems to hold its tone down to pretty low volumn levels and unlike a hotplate your not running your tubes at max. For the price it can't be beat and works far better than most master volumns I've tried. JGK

Did you scale the whole amp or just the power tubes or powertubes and PI??

The VRM drops the total voltage to all the tubes I've had it in my sIII for 3 months now and it works great check the other posting about the VRM in the forum. JGK

Oh I am very aware of the technology. I use London Powers "powerscaling" in my 50 watt.
But by adding a few components you can only vary the B+ for the o/p tubes and leave the regular voltage on the preamp and PI tubes, Or o/p and PI ect.
The tones are different for each arrangement. Note..if you VVr the o/p tubes only then you need some sort of PPIMV so your not over driving the o/ps with there now reduced overhead.
