I usually get my tubes from Terry Kilgore in the states (Tube Tramp) He was recommending a nos Mullard for the EZ81. Does a tube rectifier actually colour the tone?? I mean I can see different 12ax7s and EL84s making a dif..but the rectifier??

I believe the reasoning is (someone correct me on this) that the NOS rectifiers are a LOT more reliable and last much longer than the new ones.

I think there may be some extra Mojo Juice being applied. However, I can see a rectifier have lower/higher internal impedance, hence a faster/slower responding tube. That would impact the sag and therefore tone. You might just want to look into that.

I've used lots of different NOS rectifiers over the years and I honestly haven't noticed a difference in tone with them. I will say however that the NOS tend to be far more robust than some of the new rectifiers that were out on the market.

If you can find some of the old Sylvania or RCA EZ81's they are a very strong tube and they can usually be picked up very very reasonably.

Also, if you ever come across Sovtek 5Y3s, they're different from regular 5Y3s and drop less voltage than the regular kind. So those will affect the tone of an amp, although as we know Marshall 18W style amps don't often use 5Y3s.
