why are we using this giant 630v cap when other 18 watt amps just use 50v?

The commonly used SoZo caps Trinity uses for the V1 cathode is 680nF at 160V. Maybe your thinking of a Mallory or ETR (both yellow), they are rated much higher.

Anyways you dont need a cap rated for much voltage. The preamp tubes cathode voltage is quite low (1V - 4V :roll: ). A 16V cap would work fine.

Why not go over spec though, dosent harm anything.

They dont have to be that large a voltage but this is the way they come from my supplier Sozo & ETR. You can sub a smaller, lower voltage one if you want/can find one.

so you prefer using plastic caps instead of electrolytic in that position? is it a tone thing?

Typically, electrolytics go down to 1uf, polyester/polystyrene/mustard/ orange drop etc. go from 1 on down, so it's a supply and of course, that's what's used on most amps I've seen in the low values anyway.

It would work and we do use 1 uf & 2 uf in the designs.

But 0.68 is correct for that tone/design but you can try lots of values there.
