Well, i have gone over the everything at least 3 times.
And everything looks fine.

Doesn't seem to be any bad solderings, or connections.

I will test the PT later today.
But i am not optimistic, since it started smoking and making hissing noises.

Anyway, we'll see.

What started smoking? The PT, or some other part of the amp?

Make sure the PT secondary connections are disconnected before you start testing it.

Well, something i definately wrong.

I disconnected the red ands green wires.
And tried to measure.
But i got a shock from the chassis.
Seems like there is current leaking to the chassis now.....
Maybe because the PT had a meltdown......

The red wires measured around 416 volts now, but i had to shut it down, since it started to smell again.

I am by no means an expert builder but i had it on before, with no melt down..... So i have no idea what could cause this.

Heeeelp.

Measure the chassis with your multi meter, use the AC setting. You probably have the line in voltage on the chassis (120V/240V).

Is your IEC socket grounded?

I would think if the chassis was grounded and there was line voltage on the chassis that would cause a huge current surge and blow the fuse, maybe I am wrong.

Also check for shorts in your power supply.

Another test you can do with the transformer completely disconnected, but while still bolted to the chassis, is to measure the resistance between the various primary and secondary leads and the chassis. If all is well, this reading should be very high, in the order of many megohms, which will show as infinity on many digital meters.

Thanks Guys.

But seriously, everytime i turn it on, the PT starts hissing and smoking after like 15 seconds, and i fear it's going to blow.
Is it possible that the wires inside the PT had a meltdown, and are leaking current to the chassis?

I will try and measure the current going through the chassis.

It's just weird, cause this didn't happen before......

thanks

Nicolai

Yes, it is, but it would have taken something very extreme to make that happen.

I noticed that you didn't reconnect the PT red Hi Voltage leads to the diodes on the board. Instead they were connected to the 2K4 5W power resistor on the board.

This means 720 VAC was applied to the center tap of the OT & the 1K 5W resistors of the power tubes.

 OK, that's pretty extreme. As well as hurting the PT, it could also kill some electrolytic capacitors, and maybe also burn out the 2k4 5W resistor.

Yeah you are right, crap.
That was a stupid mistake.

I am pretty sure the PT is gone. Since its leaking. And hissing and smelling each time i turn it on. Can it be fixed you think.
The 2K4 5W power resistor is gone for sure.
What else do i need to change?

Live and learn......:-)

Thanks

Nicolai

Is the PT hissing, leaking and smelling when you run it completely disconnected from the amp? There's also good chance the filter caps have been damaged.

Yes, I would start as z says. Totally disconnect PT & measure it up. Measure all the resistors on the power side. You will have to test the caps as well. If your meter has a cap function great, OTW, test for shorts from each 50 uf cap terminal to ground (3rd) terminal.

Hi Again,

Ok i have some time to move on.

Sorry for the stupid questions.

How do i measure the PT, totally disconnected.

And how do i check caps. I am not sure my multimeter can check caps, is there a way to check without?

Thanks

Nicolai

Disconnect all PT leads except mains. Isolate all the leads so they dont touch anything or each other. You might want to tape them so they cant move around.

If you have clips/jumpers, connect them to the leads you want to measure. Best if you have a variable AC but barring that, ensure the amp is fused for 1 A or less, turn the power on.

Measure across the Hi voltage 720 VAC leads and from each lead to the center tap. Repeat with the 6.3 VAC heater leads.

That's a start.

OK,
So the replacement transformer is on it's way. I checked it and it's fine here on 220V. I'm also sending 2 - 50/50uf can caps, a 2K4 5W power resistor, 5 diodes & the 18V Zener diode. I dont know what else to send so I hope this works.

We'll have to start this amp up very, very carefully because we dont really know what was damaged.
