I am not too knowledgeable on how to choose the right speakers as far as wattage goes. From what I gather the higher the wattage the less breakup and optimally I should choose ones that are 1 1/2 to 2 times higher in wattage than the output of the amp. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am going to be building the 18 Watt Plexi. So should I be looking at 25-30 watt speakers, 50 watts, or larger? I don't mind breakup but I would like to keep it clean until I really push it.

I plan to build a 2X12 cab so does a mismatch in speaker wattage an issue?

There really isn't any such thing as a mis-match in speaker wattage with a guitar amp - just as long as you don't go too low in power. A single 20W or 25W Celestion Greenback speaker works fine with a Marshall 18W amp. Marshall's own 1974X RI version uses the 20W Heritage Greenback. So use that as your base line to work from power-wise. Trinity can sell you a pair of Tone Tubbys for a 2X12 cab, say one alnico with one ceramic, and there are plenty of other options from Avatar, W eber, Eminence, Warehouse Speakers or Scumback....
