I think in 2010 I will try and build a clone of the 1x12 combo of the original 18 watter.

Is the trem worth it? Or should I stick to one of the 18s with more tonal options?

I just bought a used Celestion speaker that came from oneof the reissues (not available separately from Celestion or Marshall) and will be using it.

Is the stock amp like the right hand side of the sIII - one with and one without tremolo?

Hey aj, Stephen used to offer a 1974x clone kit. I made a combo back in??? 2004 I think. I believe it's now discontinued, but give him a call, he may be able to reissue it.

Yes the tremelo is worth it; very lush and "tubee". Don't know about the S111.I us a Private Jack in my combo and it has lots of "krang' and "spank". Mine sounds best with hb pickups, just set the volume at 10.

Aj, I'm not sure of your question. The kit included a "layout" for the amp; I'm not aware of any other. Stephen would be able to help you there.

OK, I was unaware that Trinity had a complete kit for the 1974x..

So there muct have been a Trinity schematic and layout, BOM, etc...

I am actually going to see STephen next week and will talk about my plans :)

That should make for a sweet project Andrew, especially since you have a TMB already (can't recall which version of the Trinity 18 you have).

I have the 1974x's big brother on my build list...the JTM45 "Bluesbreaker" model. Like you I've always wanted a JTM45, but with a tremolo too? Sweet...

I may put that on hold for a while though. My current project is a '65-ish Deluxe Reverb & that may curb my desire for a 2-channel tremolo rig for a while...unless Shephen & Phil pull a Bluesbreaker-ish kit out of their butts in the near future that is, then things could get crazy.

Actually, you know what? A 1974x-ish amp with 6V6's might be a sweet little rig...especially if it could also take KT-66's like the Triwatt. Damn - I think I just wet 'em...

Im doing a JTM45 right after I get back from down south. Its ready waiting for me :)

My wife is going to kill me when I move all my gear shortly, from my house in Kirkland Lake - town where we gig - to our home in Timmins. She knows I have a lot of stuff but right now its scattered all over, at work, at our house, at my house (which I am selling since I am moving my shop to where we live soon) and at the rehersal place.

Currently I have about 22 guitars, 7 amps, 7 soeaker cabs and a whole load of other gear (like my pa system). We are going to have to buy a larger home...I keep telling her I will need room for the drum kit I plan to get ;)

well, thanks to Zaphod (over at 18w site) I have a trem chassis and panel on order.

I plan to use a Trinity set of xformers and source what I can locally (well, since I am in Toronto, locally to me for the next week)

Picked up my greenback speaker two days ago.

WIll build my JTM 45 first, but hopefully will get to the 18W combo sometime in the next few months (or sooner).

Will post my update here...

Dang it, some imposter's using my name over there!

FYI current production Greenback speakers take an awful lot of breaking in.

even the ones that come in the repro 1974x? I thought they were supposed to be "pre aged" by Celestion for Marshall?

Anyhow, thats OK... I will just have to play it a lot.

Funny side note - the fellow from GDS Amps, Graydon, said he has been through my small home town of Kirkland Lake many times! What a small world...

Yes, that's true. But you can only buy those from Marshall (and their dealers). They're not available through Celestion's channels.

Graydon is actually a Canadian who defected over the border. He was also one of the main people behind the Marshall 18W revival, and could probably be rightfully called "Mr 18W" :)

If you go back to my 1st post... I bought one already, that came from a 1974x repro.

Got it from Pete Faragher, I imagine he took it out of his 1974x (which he later sold).

Ah OK. Then you won't need to worry about breaking it in.

I'm afraid my short term memory isn't real good.

To me the trem channel is the essence of 18-watt-ness. Even if you don't use trem, the voice of that channel is "just right".

I bought one of Graydon's 1974x kits while I was still in Ohio. It was my first build. It's an awesome sounding amp. I replaced the orange drop tone caps with Sozos, but all else is stock GDS stuff. Graydon's a great guy and his 18 watt manual is amazing.

I thought I posted this yesterday but for some reason it didnt work...

i finally got my parts - at least most of them - for the 1974x build. A set of Trinity 18 watt transformers, most of the resistors and caps and pots, etc. and of course I have the chassis and faceplate.

I will start with the layout of my bare board and getting the turrets in.

Well, the cab is done! (post a picture, Stephen!)

But sadly my amp build has been on hold for the summer... too busy flying and building model planes, and trying to get my new shop going.

but soon the cold and wet/snow will be here and I will get back on the project.

I dont know, its still sitting in Toronto! I am heading to the city at the end of the month but I am flying down. But I think I can grab it and bring it back to Timmins. God knows I have flown down with enough wood packed into boxes :)

I think I will build my Tramp first, then finally start this one. Man, its been almost a year since I started thinking of this one and bought the speaker, etc. 2010 was a whirlwind year for sure...
