I have used a JJ 12AT7 PI Tube in my Triwatt with JJ 6V6 Power Tubes since I built my amp. Would switching to a 12AX7 give the amp a slightly more Marshallish Crunch, or just lower the clean headroom? I am looking for a little more crunch vs. saturation.

Also, I heard the large plate 12AX7s make better PI's than the small plate ones?

Thanks

I tried both in mine and the 12AX7 was definitely a little more crunchy & punchy. That's why a lot of players swapped them.

Personally I like it a little better with the 12AT7, especially with the additional gain stage being available.

I found an unused early 1990s Sovtek 12AX7WB in my tube box and made the switch. My Weber_Axis 12 Speaker likes it better than the 12AT7. If you were to look at the amp sound wise as between a Black Face Fender and a Marshall. With a 12AT7 it sits right in the middle, and with a 12AX7 it's 2/3ths to the Marshall side.
