More than one bass player has asked about a B15. I've been reading a lot more about preamp design lately (see pentodepress.com books) and Ampeg had a very atypical approach to tube amp design with high voltages and lots of headroom. I'll be checking out my B15 'prototype' that is sitting, waiting, on the shelf to see how it conforms to their original specs.

That would be too much information! I would like to have a B15 board done based on the B15 pics I have and circuitry I've seen. Then I'd want to put that into the donor prototype.

But first, make the donor one work & give it a listen.

Lots to do. Not enough time to do it all!

Loving the 100 watt B15 idea mentioned in another thread. Sure wish I could find a Thunderman schematic, tho. Some say it's a B15 clone, but since it has a completely different tube complement I gotta wonder.

I also want a DI out for the FOH/PA, to the mixer and/or laptop. I would like either switchable output or VRM. Then it can be used in a more flexable way, practice/bedroom/studio and stage. 2 channel voicings would be nice, maybe triwatt OD with pushpull or footswitch could be adopted for those rare occasions that the bass player needs to go to the next level of drive. Chassis should be transgendered and able to do both combos or head. KT66 would mean I have the tubes and spares already, KT88s would be fine as well, helps heat the basement in the winter. I use them in my audio system. Front mounted analog power meter would be nice. Then it could also be used for biasing using a switch. Effects in/out could be useful as well. And has to be a fliptop in combo form
I will add to this wish list as time creeps on.

There were 2 Thunderman amps. The Thunderman and the Thunderman 100.

the 100 was a fliptop that used the same family of tubes IIRC, the Thunderman was a 45w that was a different design IIRC. Only saw the inside of the 100.


Still have to decide on what 18w I want to build and the TC15. have to decide which order to do the builds in. Maybe another triwatt to use as interm bass amp using the kt66 output.

The Matchless Thunderman 100 Bass Boutique amp is a fairly rare amp that provides a great amount of tone. matchless-thunderman-100-bass-ampThis amp features a flip top head that was built by Mark Sampson. The Thunderman, which is no longer produced by Matchless, is constantly reviewed as one of the top tube bass amps ever. Even when they were originally built, there were only a very limited number of Thunderman 100 bass amps were produced. The amp, however, has quite the following—it has been used by many different players over the years, including the bassist for Guns and Roses and Duck Dunn.



The Matchless Thunderman is completely hand wired and hand made. It includes some very interesting and different features, such as a light in the head that illuminates the Matchless name plate. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to find a Matchless Thunderman 100 bass boutique amp these days. Those who have one of these amazing amps are holding on to them because they can be used for many different venues, large or small, plus they make great recording amps.

If you do find one available for purchase, don’t expect to get it cheap—the Matchless Thunderman generally goes for $3,000 to $4,000 or more.

Apparently only 12 were ever made which tells me something!

LED edgelit or EL backlit?
I'm working on a Trace Elliot right now that has an 18" blacklight under the faceplate to make the green silkscreen glow
